Is it at all possible? Say I would like to move a mining laser or engine from one ship to another, is it possible?

I haven't tried trading equipment directly ship to ship, but it's definitely possible if you drop the equipment in a warehouse and then pick it up with the other ship.

you can move cargo between ships in stations. click hangar then select a ship then select cargo and click "move"

no need to have planets or do anything with marketplace
